Program at Otis A. Mason Elementary School is to help every student strive towards their personal best!\u00a0 By maintaining a comprehensive school counseling program, we will maximize every students social\/emotional development,\u00a0 academic achievement, and career development potential.\u00a0 the goal is for students to become responsible citizens and lifelong learners.\u00a0 We will focus our efforts through partnerships with parents\/guardians, staff, and community members.\u00a0 Our program will enable all students to become successful, productive citizens and lifelong learners in a world full of diversity and change.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Comprehensive School Counseling Program<\/h2><p>\u201cA comprehensive school counseling program is an integral component of the school\u2019s mission. Comprehensive school counseling programs, driven by student data and based on the ASCA National Model: \u2022 ensure equitable access to a rigorous education for all students \u2022 identify the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K\u201312 comprehensive school counseling program \u2022 are delivered to all students in a systematic fashion \u2022 are based on data-driven decision making \u2022 are provided by a state-credentialed school counselor\u201d -American School Counselor Association 2017<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Purpose of School Counseling<\/h2><ul><li>To provide a safe place to express and validate feelings<\/li><li>To help students with problem solving and building coping skills<\/li><li>Assist in increasing self-esteem<\/li><li>To support parents and school staff in working with students<\/li><li>To teach communication skills and promote communication between students, parents and school<\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">School Wide &amp; Classroom Lessons<\/h2><p>Throughout the year students receive education around the 6 Pillars of Character:<\/p><ul><li>Trustworthiness<\/li><li>Responsibility<\/li><li>Respect<\/li><li>Fairness<\/li><li>Citizenship<\/li><li>Caring<\/li><\/ul><p>In addition, students receive lessons focusing on Social Emotional Learning Topics such as:<\/p><ul><li>Self-Awareness<\/li><li>Self-Management<\/li><li>Social Awareness<\/li><li>Relationship Skills<\/li><li>Responsible Decision Making<\/li><\/ul><p>Other Possible topics covered (but not limited to) may include the following:<\/p><ul><li>Understanding our school community<\/li><li>Academic and Personal Success<\/li><li>What\u2019s in our control<\/li><li>Friendship and communication skills<\/li><li>Anger Management and Conflict Resolution<\/li><li>Career Exploration<\/li><li>Safer Smarter Kids (State required safety program)<\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Individual Assistance<\/h2><p>The School Counselor\u2019s goal is to build relationships with all students so they feel comfortable trusting and leaning on them in their time of need.\u00a0 The School Counselor offers assistance to students with social\/emotional needs, educational needs, and career development.<\/p><p>Students can be referred to the school counselor by classroom teachers, other staff, parents, or self-referrals.<\/p><p>The School Counselor is not a licensed mental health counselor or licensed clinical social worker.\u00a0 Services provided by the school counselor are typically short-term and solution-focused.\u00a0 If more intensive, long-term counseling is warranted, a school counselor may be a resource in helping identify those needs.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Small Groups<\/h2><p>Being part of a small group enables students a safe environment to express themselves and learn skills that will help them be more successful students and citizens.\u00a0 Small groups can offer students a place to feel a sense of community and build stronger friendships.<\/p><p>Groups are typically 20-30 minutes and during lunch or resource time to avoid disruption to the educational process.\u00a0 Students must have parent permission to participate.\u00a0 Confidentiality is expected from all group members.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Collaboration with Parents\/Staff<\/h2><p>An important part of helping students grow to their fullest potential is the partnership established between all adults with the same goal in mind for each individual. Collaboration between those adults, as well as the student, is in the best interest of the child.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Testing<\/h2><ul><li>F.A.S.T. and S.T.A.R. Testing Coordinator<\/li><li>ACCESS for ELLs Testing Coordinator and Administrator<\/li><li>CogAT (screening instrument used to identify gifted students)<\/li><li>IPT &#8211; English Language Learners screening instrument<\/li><\/ul><h2 style=\"text-align: center\">MTSS Team Member<\/h2><p>The MTSS Team identifies students who are struggling with grade level academic instruction and\/or
