Science Expo in a nut shell:
- Your child chose a science experiment and wrote down how to do this experiment.
- Your child will set up and perform the experiment at home. They will need to write down what they see and how the experiment is working and any results they see. Write this down as a rough draft at home.
- Your child will also need to use books, the internet and any other medium of research you can think of to research their experiment. For instance: If your child is telling me that soap breaks water tension, I will want to know what water tension is, and why soap breaks this. This will be written in the form of a question that I give your child and an answer that will be attached to the tri fold board.
- I will write down a specific question that your child will need to answer about their particular project. I explained to them that it is fine if they lose the question, I do not mind giving them TWO more questions. If they lose those 2 questions? No problem, I will be glad to have them answer FOUR questions. This continues until they stop losing their question. Usually, they don’t lose that first question.
- Then they bring that paper work to school on the day of the science fair. We will then do the rough draft paperwork here. After the rough draft is assembled and checked by me, they will take the paper work home again to make a final draft.
- Buy a big tri - fold board from Staples, Walmart, Office Max….. The size is 36 x 48 inches. Color does not matter. Place all the information on the board on separate pieces of paper (materials, procedure, hypothesis, problem, data, results, conclusion, any graphs and pictures your child has).
- On the day of the science expo, the student brings in the tri fold board and the experiment (if possible) to show off at the expo.
- The day of the Expo: The expo is from 4:00-6:00. I encourage all students to stay at school with me in the classroom from 3:00-4:00 pm, so transportation is not an issue. A permission slip will be sent home the week before Expo explaining this further.
Parents: your child NEEDS to know the multiplication facts thoroughly. They have made flash cards and are encouraged to study one set each day. (example: the 3's on Tuesday, the 4's on Monday etc.) Please help them learn them by sheer memorization. Unfortunately there really is no magic trick other than practice.
The newsletter is up on the website-Thanks!
Different ways to study spelling and vocabulary words
_____1. Write the words in alphabetical order.
_____2. Divide each word into syllables
_____3. Write your spelling words in crayon or pen.
_____4. Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.
_____5. Write each spelling word in a rainbow of colors. First write the words with a red crayon. Trace over the words with a blue crayon. Finally, trace the words again with a green crayon.
_____6. Use each word in a sentence and underline each word.
_____7. Write the words and a synonym for each word.
_____8. Write the words and an antonym for each word
_____9. Record words on a cassette tape, spelling each word with a tape recorder.
____10. Write your words with all the letters scrambled up. Then ask a parent or sibling to unscramble the words on your paper. Correct that person’s work.
____11. Write each spelling word three times in print, and then three times in cursive.
____12. Write your spelling words as fractions based on the number of vowels and consonants in each word.
____13. Make a word search using the words.
____14. Write each spelling word. Next to each word, write two additional words of at least three letters that can be spelled using the letters in the word. Example: The word pickle can be used to make the words lick, pick, like, and lip.
____15. Name the parts of speech for each word. Some may have more than one part of speech, as many of the words have multiple meanings. (Noun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition etc…)
____16. Write tongue twisters with the words
____17. Write a story, poem, song or rap with the words. Underline each word.
____19. Write a definition for each word.
____20. Write the words in a code. Provide a key to the code.
____21. Draw/illustrate each word in a box
____22. Use the words in similes or metaphors (He was quiet as a mouse)
